4 Monos Viticultores is nestled in the Sierra de Gredos, about 80km west of Madrid, in a mountain range that crosses west through central Spain, Extremadura and almost reaches Portugal. The region straddles several appellations: Méntrida, Vinos de Madrid, and Castilla y León, in a landscape where Mediterranean warmth and alpine attitude collide in ways that make wines from the region specially alluring. Specially those made by 4 Monos; and very specially their different Grenache parcel cuvées.
The winery's story begins with four friends and a shared passion. Javier García and Laura Robles brought the winemaking credentials; David Velasco brought the enthusiasm; and David Moreno brought something arguably more useful — actual vineyards. Together, they became 4 Monos: four monkeys, which is either a charming act of self-deprecation or an accurate description of what happens when friends go into the winemaking business together.
They farm seven hectares mostly in Cadalso de los Vidrios, with one plot in San Martín de Valdeiglesias that gives name to their eponymous parcel wine, La Danza del Viento Molino Quemado. All the vineyards sit on granitic soils — the kind that drain well and stress the vines just enough. In the winery, 4 Monos follows the Gredos playbook with conviction: whole-cluster fermentation, minimal extraction, and ageing in large-format vessels specifically chosen to keep oak at bay.
