Aseginolaza & Leunda

Jon Aseginolaza and Pedro Leunda

Navarra, San Martín de Unx

The hard to pronounce Aseginolaza & Leunda stands for non other than Jon Aseginolaza and Pedro Leunda. Two environmental biologists by training (and close school friends) that in 2016 decided to team up to create one of the most interesting wine projects in northern Spain.

They moved to Navarra (from the neighbouring Basque Country) attracted by the potential of old bush-vine Grenache that is scattered across the region and has been neglected for decades in favor of other more commercial varieties. Aseginolaza and Leunda took over 10 hectares of vineyard that they tend not only personally but by hand.

In the winery they follow a similar philosophy with spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel tanks that is then followed by subtle aging in old french oak barrels. Wines are not filtered and only added a minimum dosage of sulphur once in the bottle. The winery currently produces a total of 30.000 bottles made up by 10 different red wines, one white and one rosé.

In a region typically known for producing mass market comercial wine, Aseginolaza & Leunda is making a small dent to this conception by proving that old fashioned wine making philosophies paired with indigenous varieties can produce quality wines full of character
