Cal tiques might not be the first winery that comes to mind when thinking of the Penedés region in Catalonia (a stone throw away south of Barcelona). But its enologist and owner, Joan Rubió, is certainly one of the most knowledgeable winemakers in the region. Having worked for more than a decade for cava powerhouse Recaredo as its winemaker, Rubió shipped sail in 2015 to establish his own winery in his very own family masía (farmhouse in catalan), Cal tiques.

Together with his wife Àngels, the pair tend over 10 hectares of family vineyard under certified ecological and biodynamic principles. And although Joan at some point decades ago planted Merlot in the family estate, Cal tiques is now back working with the region's hard proven and very well adapted local variaties: Xarello, Macabeu, Malvasia de Sitges and Sumoll blanc in the whites; and Ull de llebre (Tempranillo), Monastrell and Sumoll negre in the reds.

Everything is processed manually at Cal tiques, from vineyard to winery. And most uniquely of all (this being a winery), Cal tiques doesn't use a wine press. Meaning that all of their wines are "devatted" by gravity without pressing, resulting in a unique winemaking process that adds both the subtlety of a much gentler extraction while at the same time adding complexity to the wine via the skin contact.

Cal tiques produces around 40.000 bottles a year of white, red and sparkling wines.
