Goyo García Viadero

Goyo García Viadero is located smack in the centre of one of Spain's most known —but not necessarily liked— wine regions, Ribera del Duero. Nonetheless, wines from García Viadero are as genuine as it gets in this extreme, dry, continental plateau in central Castille. Goyo comes from a wine lineage that goes back to the Valduero winery in the town of Gumiel de Mercado. But in 2003 decided to go solo. 

Now divided into three different wine making projects —García Viadero, García Georgieva, and a third project in the Valle de Liébana in Cantabria—  the winery only makes parcel wines in very small quantities. And is focused on going back not one generation, but two. To the way García Viadero's grandfather made wine in the region. Most of the winery's vineyards are located in towns around the regional capital of Aranda de Duero. The winery works with traditional grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Malvasía, Albillo Real and Palomino fino. And centres in recuperating low density bush vines that produce a fruit of much higher quality than the average vineyard in Ribera del Duero.

García Viadero is definitely considered a maverick in the region. A region better known for generous extraction, glossy new oak, and the full cosmetics counter of cellar additives. Nonetheless, Goyo early on turned his back on chemicals in the vineyard and shortcuts in the cellar and developed a true style of his own.
