La Perdida

Nacho González

Galicia, Valdeorras

In the northwest corner of the Iberian peninsula, in the small village of Lorouco, in the heart of the Galician countryside, sits the one man show of La perdida (loosely translated as "the lost one"), helmed by Nacho González. A biologist by training turned winemaker.

The region is not exactly known for its easy wine making conditions. On the contrary, with ample rain throughout the year and torrid summers, conditions are particularly challenging for a winemaker whose championing philosophy is very simple: absolute minimal intervention. Period. From vineyard to bottling (no sulphites added at any point of the winemaking). Fan of clay amphores (tinajas) and very old wood barrels, Gonzalez's wine making style is straight to the bone and without the slightest trace of make-up.

He works around 4 hectares, most of which are located at elevations of over 500 meters with local varieties that include Doña Blanca, Colgadeira, Palomino fino, Garnacha tintorera and Mencía. He produces around 20,000 bottles a year
