Raúl Moreno
Raul Moreno
Andalucía, Jerez
Raul Moreno is not your typical Andalusian winery. A one man shop helmed by no other than... Raul Moreno. Not your typical winemaker, either. Having started in the wine business as a sommelier in London, Moreno moved to Australia to study viticulture. And from there he traversed the world to learn from different wine cultures: Georgia, Bourgogne, South Africa, Portugal. And back to where he first started: his native Andalusia to establish his own winery.
Moreno has two distinct wine projects under the same roof. On the one hand, he is working on recuperating traditional Andalusian varieties that have been neglected for decades (or even centuries). Names that might not sound familiar like Jaén blanco, Vigiriego, Mantuo castellano and Melonera, among others. And, on the other, Moreno is putting to practice his New World training and technical skills to graft Portuguese varieties on old Palomino fino vineyards to try to mitigate the effects of climate change on the grape.
With his headquarters in the historical pago de Balbaina, he has vineyards scattered across Jerez: Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Miraflores, Carrascal, Pastrana, Trebujena and Alcantara. Moreno makes 12 different wines that range from sparkling (both ancestral and champenoise methods) to white, orange, clarete, red and fortified. Totalling approximately 20.000 bottles per year.
