Tentenublo

Roberto Oliván

Basque country, Rioja alavesa

Tentenublo  —the old Spanish custom of ringing church bells to wish away hailstorms— is a relatively newcomer to the Rioja wine scene. Although the vineyards and winemaking knowhow have been in the family for generations, it was not until 2011 that Roberto Oliván decided to stop selling production to bigger wineries and bottle under his own label. And thus, Tentenublo was born. With the clear intention of producing quality wines without adhering to the changing market winds and international fads that most often dominate commercial appellations such as Rioja.

Oliván has 16 hectares of vineyard that are subdivided into 40 different and distinct plots. All of them on the eastern tip of Rioja alavesa (in the province of Álava) at an altitude of over 600 metres near the town of Lanciego. He works with known varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Garnacha blanca and Viura; but also with lesser known ones such as Mazuelo, Malvasía and Jaén blanca (or Calagraño).

In the winery Oliván works with cement and oak deposits that he uses to blend most of his wines, carefully crafting assemblages designed to respond to each vintage's specific characteristics and subtleties. Tentenublo produces both red and white wines and averages around 45.000 bottles per year.
