Behind Barco del Corneta is one women's stubbornness to demonstrate that in one of Spain’s more comercial winemaking regions and grape varieties a clean, mineral, terroir driven alternative can emerge. The region is Rueda —smack in the middle of dry Castile— and the variety is of course Verdejo. Beatriz Herranz set out to prove this in 2007 and almost two decades later has established herself as one of the undisputed beacons of the region producing both entry level verdejos of great quality and more complex single vineyard whites.
She started with several family vineyards and her own Verdejo plantings in 2007 around the town of La Seca. A traditional wine producing village that during the second half of the 20th century was devoured by mass production wineries that churn out millions of bottles of homogeneous, tropical fruit perfumed wines that end up in every bar and tasca across Spain and are typically consumed at insulting low temperatures. In 2014 Felix Crespo (ex Comando G and Belondrade & Lurton) was brought along to lend a hand and is now partner at Barco del Corneta. Now the duo tend over 7 hectares of vineyard.
Herranz and Crespo currently produce around 100,000 bottles a year, with almost 80% being their entry level Cucú, 14,000 of their flagship eponymous Barco del Corneta and single vineyard wines, including their trio of El judas, La sillería and Las envidias. Although they mainly work with Verdejo, Viura and Palomino can also be found in some of their wines.
