Jade Gross
San Vicente de la Sonsierra, La Rioja.
United Nations, International Criminal Court, Alain Ducasse, Mugaritz, Celler de Can Roca, James Beard Foundation... These are just a few of the institutions Jade Gross has passed through before settling in Rioja and becoming a winemaker. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she arrived in Spain after studying political science, working in human rights defence and... attending cooking school in Paris —all before her 30th birthday. Seven years into being head chef at the über extravagant Mugaritz in the Basque Country, she discovered winemaking in 2017 through Abel Mendoza —the renowned Rioja maverick—, took him as mentor, and opted for yet another change in direction.
Gross started out buying grapes from local farmers and piano, piano went on to acquire small parcels that have allowed her to expand her initial operation in 2019 of around 800 bottles per year to her current 13.000. Now into her seventh year and based in San Vicente de la Sonsierra —east of Haro, right along the meanders of the Ebro river—, she has parcels in Labastida, Laguardia, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Cordovin y Alto de Najerilla. She currently tends five hectares that include plantings of Tempranillo blanco, Viura, Garnacha blanca, Malvasia, Tempranillo, Garnacha.
In both vineyard and winery Gross strives for the lightest possible footprint as a winemaker. Attentive to soils, microclimates and the precise conditions of each growing season, she adapts her winemaking to nature's whims. Her current lineup includes four reds, four whites and her only rose Jabalina.
