Ismael Gozalo is a winemaker like no other. Opinionated, hard-headed and with deep roots in Nieva, the small town in Segovia where he goes by his own playbook and style.
His family has been associated with different wineries in the area where Gozalo started working in his youth. Later, alongside Javier Zaccagnini, Gozalo co-founded Ossian, a venture devoted to unlocking the potential of Verdejo, the über popular variety used in the Rueda region. The marriage didn't last long and Gozalo eventually started MicroBio.
There he's developed what he himself labels “Eco-logical” farming —ecology and logic working side by side. No synthetic chemicals, no viticultural shortcuts, and certainly no cosmetic tinkering in the cellar. He farms by hand, harvests by hand, and interferes as little as possible in the cellar.
Under the MicroBio Wines label he's developed the more experimental, natural side to his winemaking. But also has a slightly more serious side in wines like La Banda del Argílico, Frágil or Sin Nombre. Smaller cuvées in which you can find Gozalo's at his most playful: deliberate oxidations, skin macerations, amphoras, demijohns, lees...
